Aunt Ems Gourmet Popcorn - Home

-- GIDEE-UP LIL' CORN DOGGIES --
Recipe adapted from 'Orville Redenbacher's Popcorn Cookbook'
- Ingredients:
- 5 cups of vegetable oil (for deep frying those little doggies)
- 2 cups of Aunt Em's Tender White Popcorn (finely crushed - like stuck in a blender for a while type crushed)
- 1-cup all-purpose flour
- 3 Tablespoons of sugar
- 1-½ teaspoons of baking powder
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- 2 Tablespoons of vegetable shortening
- 1 egg
- 1 cup of milk
- 1 lb of hotdogs cut in half (you should have (10) 2 ½ inch dogs after you cut the dogs)
- 20 (6-inch) wooden skewers (skewer is a fancy word for stick, and any wooden stick will do. If you happen to be camping when you are making this treat, strip off the bark of the branches of a freshly cut tree branch and presto; you have a skewer).
- Directions:
- * Heat the vegetable oil in a 2-quart saucepan to 350° F.
- * Combine Aunt Em's Popcorn, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a medium-mixing bowl.
- * Cut in shortening until mixture is crumbly.
- * Add egg and milk to dry mixture and beat vigorously by hand (well you should really use a whisk or wooden spoon) until mixture is smooth (tired yet? Really makes you appreciate electric mixers doesn't it).
- * Inset the wooden skewer (stick) into the round end of each hotdog half.
- * Dip each skewered dog into the batter, then hold upside down over the batter to let excess drip off. If you have any part of the hotdog exposed, repeat the step.
- * Place coated hotdog into the heat vegetable oil one at a time and allow the oil to completely cover each dog.
- * Fry until golden brown on all sides (long handle tongs are a must when deep frying).
- * Drain on paper towel and serve immediately.
